Women often find ways to care for others, and to express their deepest hopes, thoughts, and emotions through fiber arts. This production is inspired by such women, contemporary and drawn from mythology. Women use their hands and their hearts to weave, knit, crochet, and embroider, turning disparate threads into something healing, comforting, and whole.  In this show, poetry and improvisational dance are intertwined to create a unique textile of movement.

Discount tickets for $10 have been provided for all performances:

  • Saturday, November 15th - 2pm and 7 pm

What Gender Is Your Brain? Differences in Communication Styles

  • Edgewater Branch, Chicago Public Library (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Feeling misunderstood can be tough. It often causes conflicts or hurt feelings among loved ones and friends, which can be frustrating. Research shows that we're misunderstood about 90% of the time. While many reasons contribute to this, in this workshop, we'll focus on one key factor using Professor Deborah Tannen's findings on gender communication to demonstrate how gendered language patterns and cross-communication lead to misunderstandings. By the end of this workshop, participants will better understand their own communication styles, recognize the language patterns of others, and learn strategies to improve mutual understanding. So, bring your reading glasses as we will begin by completing a short questionnaire to personalize your experience during our time together.

Presented by Victoria Nabors, a tenured professor at Malcolm X College, where she teaches human communication courses, primarily focusing on public speaking. She also chairs the community college interest group for the Eastern Communication Association, helping to plan their annual conventions. Additionally, Victoria has authored many well-researched books, including Know What I’m Saying: Basics of Speech Communicationsa widely used college textbook.

Hearing and the Brain (via Zoom)

Hearing and the Brain (via Zoom)

Hearing is one of our most important senses. The ability to recognize spoken speech allows us to learn, teach, form relationships, and take part in social activities. But things can go awry. Hearing loss is common as we grow older, impacting communication, which can also be affected by changes to memory and processing. We will learn more about this from Pamela Souza, whose research laboratory at Northwestern University studies the effects of hearing loss in order to guide decisions about hearing treatment. Her presentation will review the connections between our ears and brain, what changes as we age, and what we can do about it.

Pamela Souza is an audiologist, researcher, and teacher in Northwestern’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. She studies speech recognition, hearing aids, and the effects of aging and cognitive change on communication and has published and presented widely on those topics. Her clinical interests include hearing aids, severe hearing loss, hearing-assistive technology, and patient counseling. Although she has dealt with patients of all ages, she most enjoys working with older adults. Her research and practice are also motivated by personal experiences with hearing loss and dementia within her own family.

Advance registration is required to attend. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the event.

This program is co-sponsored by Edgewater Village Chicago and Chicago Area Villages Collaborative.

Theatre at Loyola University: "The Neighborhood of the Loners"

Join us at Loyola University for their performance of The Neighborhood of the Loners., written by Jimena Márquez and directed and translated by Kelly Howe.

The Neighborhood of the Loners is a place where residents live without social interactions or contact with the world around them. This sanctuary of solitude is disrupted by a sudden death in the neighborhood. The walls between neighbors come down, as the community must come together to answer the question at hand: Who poisoned Miss Pérez? Absurdist, comedic, and harrowing, this world-premiere translation explores how isolation impacts society.

For this performance, there will be a post-show discussion with the director/translator Kelly Howe and will center around the process of translating the play from Spanish.

The Newhart Family Theatre features an Open Captioning system. Audience members who wish to use this feature should select rows C, D, or E, seats 305 and up in the house right section.

The Newhart Family Theatre features an Audio Loop for audience members who use hearing aids.

Tickets can be purchased here, or by calling the box office at 773-508-8400 between 4 and 6 p.m. on Mondays. Use discount code EVCNEIGHBOR to purchase half-price tickets.
