Feeling misunderstood can be tough. It often causes conflicts or hurt feelings among loved ones and friends, which can be frustrating. Research shows that we're misunderstood about 90% of the time. While many reasons contribute to this, in this workshop, we'll focus on one key factor using Professor Deborah Tannen's findings on gender communication to demonstrate how gendered language patterns and cross-communication lead to misunderstandings. By the end of this workshop, participants will better understand their own communication styles, recognize the language patterns of others, and learn strategies to improve mutual understanding. So, bring your reading glasses as we will begin by completing a short questionnaire to personalize your experience during our time together.
Presented by Victoria Nabors, a tenured professor at Malcolm X College, where she teaches human communication courses, primarily focusing on public speaking. She also chairs the community college interest group for the Eastern Communication Association, helping to plan their annual conventions. Additionally, Victoria has authored many well-researched books, including Know What I’m Saying: Basics of Speech Communications, a widely used college textbook.
