Coffee & Conversation

  • Broadway Armory 5917 North Broadway Chicago, IL, 60660 United States (map)

Our coffee and conversations are in the Broadway Armory dining room and start at 9 a.m. Meet up with us there for lively exploration of each week’s topics.

Moderators will facilitate the discussion as the group explores interesting and sometimes controversial topics. Each week’s discussion is typically accompanied by some readings you’ll receive in advance via email. Topics for the subsequent week are decided at the previous discussion. Today’s topics are:

  • Topic #1: Immigration policy split within Democratic Party: In face of a surge in immigration, Democratic governors and mayors have publicly called on President Biden for changes in his immigration policy. What has prompted this split? How should Biden respond? What could be the consequences for the November election?

  • Topic #2: We continue our conversation concerning the book “Future Shock" and we will focus on the workplace: the loss of traditional skills; the need for continual retraining; the decline in expectation of long-term employment by the same employer; worries about an adequate pension; loss of seniority rights that lead to meaningful promotions. On a personal level, we will explore how successful we were in coping with "future shock" at work. What were our personal sources of resilience? How did we find the necessary training for this process of continuous vocational adaptation? What advice do we provide those just starting out in the workplace?

If you are interested in participating in our discussions but are not on our distribution list, send an email to John Williams and we will add you to the list.
